3. Vaginal discharges and the methods of purification
Vaginal discharges and the methods of purification:
- Ruthubah (Mucous/Moisture) of vagina
- Islamic legal rulings for the women in Wadi, Madzi, Mani: Definition, Comparisons of these three discharges, Methods of purification.
- Ruthubah (Moisture) of vagina
Q: What does it mean with Ruthubah (Moisture) of vagina?
A: It is very common for almost all healthy women to experience what is called leukorrhea. This is the secretion of vaginal mucous related to ovulation or other causes. It comes from the uterus and not through the urethra.
The internal anatomy of the human vulva, with the clitoral hood and labia minora indicated as lines. The clitoris extends from the visible portion to a point below the pubic bone.
Q: Is there any clear ayah from the Qur’an or evidence from the Sunnah regarding Ruthubah (vaginal mucous/moisture)?
A: No, although this is something that must have afflicted women during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), there is no clear pronouncement about it.
The statement that everything that exits from the private parts is impure and nullifies ablution is not a hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) but it is simply the conclusion of many scholars based on the known examples of that time. If this particular liquid nullifies ablution, then such women would have to make ablution for every prayer as this fluid exits from the body, like the case of istihadha.
**(Note that some women sometimes feel this fluid inside the body before it actually flows from the body. Until it flows out from the body, there is no question about its nullifying the ablution.)
However, since there is no evidence for that in the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him), since this is a very common occurrence and since such a conclusion would involve hardship upon the women (especially at the time of the Prophet), it seems there is no evidence to declare such a secretion as nullifier of the ablution. Allah knows best.
Q: What is the fatwa regarding this Ruthubah?
A: Fatwa on the Different Types of Discharge -by Shaykh Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf.
There is a difference of opinion among the scholars concerning cervical mucus or vaginal discharge. According to Imam Abu Hanifa, because its origin is the cervix, which is the farj dakhil in Arabic, it is not considered impure, as long as it is not discolored, and therefore, does not break the wudū’. According to his two students, Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad, it is impure, regardless of its color, and will break the wudū’. Hence, there is a difference of opinion. Some of the later scholars based the rulings on the first view and others based it on the second view.
If a women experiences excessive discharge, she should avail the first opinion which does not consider the discharge to be impure. Hence, she will not need to renew her wudū’ each time the discharge occurs. However, if the discharge does not occur frequently, it is preferable to renew the ablution and follow the path of precaution.
Similarly, it is preferred that a woman wash those garments that have been affected by the discharge. However, if she is unable to do so, she can avail the more lenient option.
4. Islamic legal rulings for the women in Wadi, Madzi, Mani.
Q: What are Wadi, Madzi, and Mani?
A: Definitions:
Wadi is a liquid discharged after the urination or carrying heavy object.
Madzi is a liquid discharged when one is aroused without the ejaculation.
Mani is a light yellowish liquid discharged from a woman’s vagina by the ejaculation of the womb in the state of intercourse or a dream of having intercourse. Allāma Ibn Ābidīn describes it as follows: “If it is watery yellow then it is the ejaculatory fluid of women”. However, only some women can ejaculate mani.
COMPARISON | WADI | MADZI | MANI |
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE? | it is discharged after urination or carrying heavy object | it is discharged with the arousal of desire | it is discharged by the ejaculation for the ultimate sexual pleasure (orgasm) and the body starts to relax |
HOW DOES IT LOOK LIKE? | white cloudy thick liquid | white sticky and light liquid | yellowish light liquid, It has also been reported to be milky in color and ranging in its thickness and odor based on a woman’s diet, overall health and the phase she is experiencing within her menstrual cycle (women) white thick liquid (men) |
Methods of purification:
COMPARISON | WADI | MADZI | MANI |
IS IT NAJIS? HOW TO PURIFY IT FROM OUR BODY OR PLACE? | yes, it is najis mutawassithah * The methods of purification from Mutawassithah (Middle types of najis) 1. Remove the najis from the place. 2. Wash the place with pure water until the colour, smell, and taste of the najis has gone. The place has been purified when the colour, smell, and taste of the najis has gone. | yes, it is najis: a. mutawassithah (majority of scholars based on: The Prophet asked to wash the penis and take ablution (Bukhari & others). b. mukhaffafah (Sayyid Sabiq based on the Prophet asked to sprinkle it over the cloth wherever the liquid appear (al-Tirmidzi-hasan sahih ) Therefore, it is recommended to wash the private parts where the mazi was, and wash with the water on the cloth wherever the liquid appear, if it is difficult to wash then you can sprinkle the water on it. | different opinions: 1. Yes, it is najis mutawassithah (Hanafiyyah & Malikiyyah). 2. No, it is not najis (Shafi’iyyah & Hanabilah and the majority of scholars) Therefore, it is recommended to wash it when it is wet, and to scratch it when it is dry. |
Q: What are the Islamic legal rulings for the women in Wadi , Madzi, and Mani ?
A: It is important to mention here that; Muslim men & women have the same Islamic legal rulings when in the state of Wadi, Madzi, and Mani.
When a Muslim discharges Wadi or Madzi he or she is in the state of light/minor metaphysical impurity (the same as if he or she urinates), which needs him or her to wash his penis or her vagina and perform ablution in order to gain purity.
Therefore, before performing ablution, he or she cannot pray, cannot do Thawaf around the Kaabah, and cannot touch the Qur’an.
When a Muslim discharges Mani he or she is in the state of great or major metaphysical impurity which needs him or her to perform obligatory bath in order to gain purity.
Therefore, before performing obligatory bath, he or she cannot pray, cannot do Thawaf, cannot enter the Masjid, cannot touch the Qur’an, and cannot recite the Qur’an.
COMPARISON | WADI | MADZI | MANI |
DO WE HAVE TO PERFORM ABLUTION OR OBLIGATORY BATH? | All scholars agree that we have to perform ablution and not the obligatory bath before we pray. Therefore, before performing ablution, he or she cannot pray, cannot do Thawaf around the Kaabah, and cannot touch the Qur’an. | All scholars agree that we have to perform ablution and not the obligatory bath before we pray. Therefore, before performing ablution, he or she cannot pray, cannot do Thawaf around the Kaabah, and cannot touch the Qur’an. | All scholars agree that we must perform obligatory bath before we pray. (This is the state of Janabah) Therefore, before performing obligatory bath, he or she cannot pray, cannot do Thawaf, cannot enter the Masjid, cannot touch the Qur’an, and cannot recite the Qur’an. |
Assalamualaykum. If a woman wakes up and finds yellow discharge on underwear but does not remember having a sexual dream, is ghusl obligatory?
ReplyDeleteWa'alaykumussalam. Sorry for a very late reply. To answer your question: No, ghusl is not obligatory when you found yellow discharge on underwear but did not remember having a sexual dream. In fact, for a woman, "mani" is actually very hard to be discharged, and not every woman can experience it. If the 'mani' is discharged then it will be in a form of ejaculation. WAllahu a'alam. ^_^
ReplyDeleteassalamalikum,if there is continuous white discharge n dnt knw exactly the time n being out e.g on job or market than is it necessary to do ablution.
ReplyDeleteWa'alaikumussalam sister. it is not compulsory to renew your ablution as the white discharge from the vagina is natural, like sweating. this view is based on contemporary scholars eg. Dr. Ruqayyah she wrote a book regarding this. if you can read arabic, here is the link: http://www.saaid.net/daeyat/roqea/26.htm . thanks. sorry for the late reply.. ^_^
